Dogs have always been called as the “Mans Best Friend”. Dogs are the most popular and preferred amongst all the domestic animals. As they come to our home’s they become an important part of our lives. Dogs show us equal amount of love and affection that we show upon them. As dogs grow older, there will be lot of change in their behavioral and health patterns. It is thus very important that we also change our interaction with the dogs in the same way. Taking care of senior dogs is very important and they need special care and attention. Some of them include giving them good and healthy food, proper exercise, maintaining cleanliness, regular vaccinations and health checkups.
The first and fore most point to be noted while taking care of senior dogs are that they are not the same as they where at their younger age. They may not be much active and energetic as they were before. They might prefer to take a break now and then and enjoy a little rest.
When talking about the health issues of a senior dog, as an owner you must be very cautious about the symptoms the dogs show. The earlier the symptoms are detected, the better and effective treatment that can be given to the dog. Visiting a veterinarian regularly is a must. Dogs should be vaccinated once in every three years. Giving a proper and a healthy diet is very important. Over feeding and food with high fat content must be avoided as it will lead to obesity and hence create health problems to the dog. Dog’s teeth must be kept very clean and must be brushed every day.
Controlling fleas and ticks is also very important for the dog’s good health.
Arthritis and Heart disease are very common amongst senior dogs. These diseases are preventable and also when treated at an early stage, they can be minimized or reversed. It is very important to detect the symptoms at an early stage itself. Finally it is good to make the senior dog a part of our life as much as possible by keeping them occupied as much as possible. By taking a little extra care senior dogs can stay fit and fine and lead a happy life.
